Sod Calculator

Enter your lawn's size to get the number of sod rolls and the topsoil to go under them.

Units

Ask your sod farm — rolls are commonly around 9–10 ft² (0.8–0.9 m²).

Set to 0 if your existing soil is good. New lawns do best on 4–6 in (10–15 cm) of topsoil.

How the sod calculator works

It multiplies the lawn’s length by its width, adds a small allowance for trimming around edges and curves, and divides by the area of one roll. If you’re laying fresh topsoil first, it also works out how much you’ll need at your chosen depth.

The formula

rolls   = length × width × (1 + waste %) ÷ area per roll
topsoil = length × width × depth
